McFaddin Refuge Re-Open After Wildfire

LIBERTY, January 4, 2012 - The McFaddin National Wildlife Refuge (Refuge) is again open to the public after a fire that began on Monday, January 2, 2012, burned approximately 13,000 acres. Firefighters from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Park Service worked contain the wildfire that occurred on the Refuge near the community of Sabine Pass.

Seasonal access areas west of Clam Lake Road, on the Refuge, are again open to the public and normal waterfowl hunt operations will resume on the Refuge, Saturday, January 7, 2012.

The public is reminded that wildfire conditions could be very dangerous. To keep communities safe from wildfires, do not build campfires or burn trash/debris piles; do not use fireworks; and properly dispose of cigarettes.
