Major Accident on FM 2684

LIBERTY, December 1, 2011 - At 12:07 AM on Thursday December 1st, the driver of a C & C Tanker Truck called 911 and notified the City of Liberty Police that his truck had been involved in an accident on FM 2684 commonly called the south Liberty Oilfield Road and FM 3361 just south of US 90.

According to City of Liberty Police Officer Elizabeth Polasek the tanker truck carrying only salt water for disposal was traveling east on FM 3361 and attempted a left turn to go north on FM 2684. As the truck was making it’s turn a white SUV with paper dealer tags traveling south on FM 2684 at speed ran under the trailer portion of the tractor trailer rig.

The SUV had an adult female driver and an adult male passenger, both suffered serious injuries in the accident.

Two Life Flight helicopters were summoned and landed at a temporary landing zone on FM 2684 to transport the injured to Houston for treatment.

Both occupants of the vehicle were trapped inside the wreckage and Liberty Firefighters utilized extraction tools, commonly called the jaws of life, to rescue the accident victims. Both appeared to have suffered head injuries.

Rescuing the male passenger in the vehicle proved to be a complicated and lengthy rescue for firefighters. Some of the doors and the roof of the vehicle had to be removed to gain sufficient access to rescue the passenger safely.

The intersection and FM 2684 was closed throughout the investigation of the accident and the rescue of the victims.

At press time the names of the accident victims are not known and any citations are a matter of the ongoing investigation into the exact cause of accident.

Update, Thrusday, December 1, 2011 - The investigation into the cause of this accident is continuing throughout Thursday and investigators are looking into whether or not alcohol may have been a factor. The driver of the SUV was Kristanya Ann Owens age 28 or Crosby, TX and the passenger in the vehicle was David Wayne Baker age 30 of Dayton.
