Bob Jamison Speaks to DRT on Chisholm Trail

LIBERTY, February 15, 2010 - J. R. “Bob” Jamison was the guest speaker at the February 6th meeting of the Franklin Hardin Chapter, Daughters of the Republic of Texas. His subject was the Chisholm Trail and its impact on the cattle industry in early Texas. Jamison entertained the members with stories of how entrepreneur, Jesse Chisholm developed this trail from deep south Texas, through Indian territory (Oklahoma) and on to markets in Dodge City, Abilene, Kansas City and St. Louis where cattle owners could obtain as much as ten times the price per head for their livestock.

A business meeting was held after the program. President Linda Jamison discussed the ongoing fund-raising for the scholarship fund through sales statewide of the chapter Texas Flag pin. It was determined that enough funds have been raised through this project to fund a scholarship to be awarded to a local college bound senior in May. A motion was entertained and approved to admit “associate members” to the chapter. Associate status would allow women that cannot prove ancestry in Texas 1846 but love Texas history and would like to participate in the Franklin Hardin Chapter, DRT by attending meetings and working on committees locally. Associate members will be asked to pay dues but will not be able to hold office, vote or participate on a state level. For more information about becoming a member or associate member, please call 258-9141.
