Officers Attend Hunter Education Instructors' Course LIBERTY, April 23, 2010 - The Liberty Police Department (LPD) recently sent two officers to the Texas Hunter Education Program instructors’ course. Lt. Larry Beard and Officer Josh Cummins are now certified as Hunter Education Instructors. Both officers are developing LPD’s program that will provide the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s (TPWD) hunter education class to the Liberty area. An official announcement on the first LPD Hunter Education class should be coming in the next couple of weeks. Under Texas law, any person born on or after September 2, 1971, must complete a Hunter Education Training Course, if they wish to hunt in the state of Texas. The current education program consists of a 10-hour course, divided into two days. There is also a home study option, with a minimum of four hours of class time. LPD’s hunter education class will follow all of the TPWD guidelines. The purpose is to produce safe, responsible, and knowledgeable hunters and shooters. The goals of the program are to promote firearm, sporting arm and hunter safety; promote hunting ethics and compliance to hunting regulations; combat poaching; promote wise use of sustainable resources and the outdoor landscape; and enhance hunting traditions and values. Officers Beard and Cummins are both hunters, and they’re eager to provide a much needed service to the Liberty area. Officer Cummins stated, “This is a great opportunity for the department, and for our local hunters. When we have safe, legal and respectful hunters, it benefits hunters and non-hunters alike.” Once LPD’s Texas Hunter Education Course has been finalized, Officer Cummins will issue a press release regarding class schedules, fees and requirements.
