We Want to Hear from YOU!

LIBERTY, June 24, 2010 - Recently i-dineout.com published a story about the City of Liberty’s crack down on people who have paid there utility bill late three times in the last year. These citizens had a $160.00 dollar deposit added on to their utility bills.

As our story indicated, many of the people were retired, living on a fixed income and social security. This group of people largely pays their utility bill after they receive there social security check, when they have the money to do it, without regard to when the bill is actually due. This practice makes them past due on their utility bills.

If you are a relative or caregiver of an elderly person who is in this situation we want to hear from you.

Please send an e-mail explaining your situation with the name address of the elderly person that this has happened to alleny@airmail.net.

City of Liberty Cracks Down on Utility Bills

Below are examples of two e-mails that we have received.

The City of Liberty Has sent bills out this month with an additional $160.00 added to it for a deposit to a lot of customers. One such customer that is going to be 97 years old and has been on a fixed income for many years and has been a resident in Liberty for over 60 years at the same address and never had her utilities disconnected. After talking with the City Utilities Dept. They insisted that she had to pay but would allow her to make payments. Is this fair? Is The City of Liberty the only electric company for this city? Why is it when we need something from the City of Liberty Utilities Dept. we have to wait for months but they demand that the people that helped this city grow by buying here and homesteading here over the years have to pay a deposit again. Yes AGAIN!! This person paid a deposit 60 years ago that she never had returned. The city utilities department should be ashamed of this and instead of punishing the people that has been here that long they should reward them to show there appreciation for them. This isn’t over and will be reported to the State. I’m sorry but I think this is VERY WRONG!! I have talked with other people that have told me that there bill this past month has doubled even with no demand for the deposit and when they called they were told that the meter wasn’t read right and some that didn’t even get a bill for the prior month so they couldn’t even compare the meter reading. Sounds to me like they are dropping the ball here.

My 81 yr old Grandmother called me about this today. She got this charge added to her bill. Her and I sit down and pay her bills once a month after her Social Security check also. She has been her for 60 + years! What the Heck!
