Roll Over Accident on FM 1409 DAYTON, May 1, 2010 - Saturday afternoon authorities were notified of a white Chrysler Sebring traveling erratically northbound on FM 1409 about five miles south of US 90.
DPS Trooper Nathan Godfrey traveling south on FM 1409 attempted to intercept the vehicle. When he spotted the vehicle coming toward him he had to take evasive action to the right to avoid a head on collision.
The vehicle left the roadway to the right into the ditch where it collided with a culvert, and rolled over after crashing through a gate. A fire broke out in the engine compartment of the vehicle and Trooper Godfrey used his fire extinguisher to put out the fire.
The Westlake Volunteer Fire Department responded as well to assist with the rescue of the two occupants of the vehicle and manage traffic control at the scene as the northbound lane of FM 1409 was closed to traffic. An older woman identified as Christie Turner and a 5-year-old girl occupied the vehicle. According to Trooper Godfrey neither was wearing a seat belt. Liberty County EMS transported both the occupants of the vehicle to San Jacinto Methodist Hospital in Baytown. Little in known about their condition other than their injuries appeared not to be life threatening. According to Trooper Godfrey the focus of the continued investigation into the accident will be on whether or not the driver of the vehicle was intoxicated. If so, they would be charged with 3rd Degree Felony Driving While Intoxicated because of the child that was in the vehicle.
