Man Suspected of Doing Business Under a Shade Tree

LIBERTY, June 10, 2010 - When Investigator Elaine Taylor of the City of Liberty Police Department went to get her vehicle inspected she noticed a Ford Explorer parked under a large shade tree at the intersection of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive and Georgia Street in Liberty.

While Taylor’s car was being inspected, she noticed vehicles stopping near the Explorer and individuals appearing the make exchanges with those in the SUV.

There were about 4 or 5 people in the SUV, according to Taylor.

Taylor called for marked patrol units to assist and she stopped one of the vehicles making an exchange with those in the SUV as it left the scene. In all about 6 subjects were detained by police for questioning at the scene as a result of this suspicious activity.

The subjects were questioned and checked for weapons. One of the subjects, Sylvester Tiggs, age 45 of Liberty was found to have in his pocket what appeared to be about 2.5 grams of Crack Cocaine that he referred to as, “My candy.”

When asked what he was doing under the shade tree, Tiggs responded that, “It was hot.”

Tiggs was taken into custody, charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance, Crack Cocaine, and transported to the Liberty County Jail. All the other subjects were released at the scene.
