Liberty Elementary and San Jacinto Elementary Evacuated

LIBERTY, April 9, 2010 - According to Liberty ISD Officials, students at Liberty Elementary and San Jacinto Elementary, located on Bowie Street and Grand Street, were bussed from those schools to the Liberty High School Gym as a result of a Gas Odorant Spill at the ENTEX Gas Substation at the intersection of Monta and Bowie Streets. There is NO gas leak. Just an odorant spill that can cause irritation when exposed to it for a long period of time. Students were bussed from the schools as a precautionary measure.

Parents can pick up students early at the High School or at regular dismissal time. Students who normally ride the bus will not be affected, as busses will run their normal schedule today.

Below is an official statement from the School District’s web site.

LES & SJE Students Temporarily Relocated Today Due to Gas Odor

We have received conflicting reports about the level of irritation that can be expected from an odorant spill at the gas sub-station across from Liberty Elementary School. There is NO gas leak. There is a strong smell from the odorant spill.

As a precautionary measure, we are sending students from San Jacinto Elementary and Liberty Elementary over to the High School gym at 11:00 a.m. Parents can pick up their children at their regular campus up until 11:00. After 11:00, parents can pick up their children at the High School gym.

If parents are unable to pick up their children, that is not a problem. We are running regular bus service from the High School gym at regular dismissal times at the end of the school day. Students that are usually picked up from LES and SJE should be picked up from the side driveway of Liberty High School.

Please note that this is NOT an emergency evacuation, but rather a precautionary measure.
