Power Outage Factor in Dayton Major Accident

DAYTON, October 17, 2010 – During a power outage in Dayton that knockout the traffic signals along US 90 a major accident occurred at Winfree and US 90 that sent a teenager to Hermann Hospital in Dayton by Life Flight around 8:02 PM Saturday.

During the power outage Officer Ricky Skarpa of the Dayton Police Department was observing traffic at the intersection of US 90 and Winfree and observed several cars not treat the intersection as a four-way stop.

According to Officer Skarpa a Red, Toyota Corolla traveling south on Winfree stopped at US 90 and then proceeded through the intersection where it was struck by a gray Chevy pickup broadside that did not stop at the intersection in the eastbound lanes of US 90.

The driver of the pickup was identified as Kelly Tien Pan age 40 of Sugarland and both the driver and the passenger in the Toyota were 16 year-old male juveniles from Dayton.

The drivers of the pickup and the Toyota were not injured. However, the passenger in the Toyota, who took the major blow when the pickup crashed into the passenger side of the vehicle had to be flown to Houston by Life Flight from a landing zone set up at the Brookshire Brothers store in Dayton.

Liberty County EMS and the Dayton Volunteer Fire Department both responded to the accident.

Citations in this accident are a matter of the continuing investigation by the Dayton Police Department. Both vehicles were insured.
