TxDOT to Build Overpass on FM 1960

DAYTON, December 21, 2010 - The state’s transportation agency will oversee a project to build an overpass at a railroad crossing once considered, in the early 1990's, as one of the most dangerous in Texas. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) says the new overpass at the Union Pacific railroad tracks on FM 1960 will eliminate the crossing and make traveling between Harris and Liberty County much safer.

“We’re in the transportation safety business,” said Randy Redmond, Beaumont District Engineer. “Eliminating any railroad crossing means eliminating the potential for a deadly wreck.”

The project involves building a new overpass approximately 100 feet to the south of the current crossing. TxDOT says traffic should not be affected by the construction. However, the department is reminding motorists to drive safely in the work zone and watch for workers.

FM 1960 is one of the busiest highways in Liberty County. Approximately 7000 vehicles use the road every day to travel to Atascocita, Humble and the George Bush Intercontinental Airport. In the late 90's TxDOT placed signals and gates at the railroad crossing which significantly reduced the number of wrecks. TxDOT says the $8.6 million project should take about two years to complete.
