Don Neyland to Receive Donation from Co-Worker LIBERTY, January 28, 2010 - Sgt. Investigator Don Neyland with the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office discovered in 2009 that he needed a kidney transplant.

Neyland has lived in Daisetta for 32 years, when he moved there from Liberty with his wife, Melissa in 1979.

Neyland has had a long and productive career in law enforcement here in Liberty County. In 1989 he worked with the Daisetta Police Department and joined the Liberty County Sheriff’s Department in1991 where over the years he served as a Deputy, Sergeant and Chief in 2004 under Sheriff Greg Arthur. Currently he serves as a Sgt. Investigator for the department.

Several of Neyland’s family members were tested to determine if they would qualify as a donor to give Neyland a kidney. None were a close match. As things worked out it was a 21-year-old coworker at the Sheriff’s Department, Barbi Vavra who was the closest match and she decided to become a kidney donor for Neyland.

In order to cover the host of expenses involved in the transplant of this kidney, there will be a benefit for Neyland at the Elks Lodge in Liberty on February 27, 2010. Barbeque Brisket and Sausage Plates will be available at the Lodge as well as through the Drive Through. Additionally there will be a raffle for a 40 caliber Glock Model 23 and tickets are five dollars each or five for twenty dollars.

Mike Parrish and his band will be providing the entertainment for the evening from 8:00 PM until midnight. Tickets for that event are $5.00.

There will also be a Blood Drive at North Main Baptist Church on February 8, 2010 from 3:00 until 8:00 PM.
