Log House Being Built in Liberty County

EASTGATE, September 17, 2010 - i-dineout.com traveled to the area of Eastgate west of Dayton Friday afternoon to view a log house being constructed on a 37 acre tract of land owned by Ken Morrison of Dayton, TX. The home is located near the center of the tact of land.

The site for the log house is not far from St. Anne's Catholic Church on FM 686 and the house itself is nestled beneath the shade of large oak trees.

According to Morrison the cabin is being constructed just the way it was done some 200 years ago the only exception being that rather than using hand saws and chisels, they are using chain saws to cut the complex mortise joints necessary to connect the logs.

Both the interior and exterior walls are being constructed using logs that came from a logging mill in northern Louisiana.

About 400 concrete blocks make up the foundation of the home upon which the logs rest. It took three truckloads of main logs to construct the building.

Ken Morrison with the help of three men and a crane are building the house.

Each of the logs costs about $270.00 dollars.

Morrison stated he decided to move to Dayton after searching all over southeast Texas because of the people who live in Liberty County, a good section of land was available, taxes were lower than surrounding areas and he would no longer have to put up with 4.5 million people in Harris County.

Morrison constructed a pond on his property and has plans for a water well, septic system and is hoping to have enough money left to construct a fireplace.

The site of the house is just beautiful. It is very quiet and full of old oak trees, unlike the pine forests so common to Liberty County.

Working steadily Morrison hopes to complete the structure by year’s end and be able to move out of the mobile home he currently is staying in near the front of the property.
