Hurricane Alex Threatens South Texas
LIBERTY, June 30, 2010 - Having lived through the misery and inconvenience of Hurricanes Rita and Ike, we should all be mindful of what the residents of South Texas are currently facing with the threat of Hurricane Alex which was upgraded to a Hurricane late last night and is expected to make landfall late tonight or very early tomorrow morning.
Below is an assessment of the conditions residents of South Texas can expect.
• LOCATION
• Hurricane Alex (80 mph with higher gusts) is 190 miles SE of
Brownsville, moving northwest at 07 mph.
• Outer bands currently moving into South Texas with tropical storm wind
gusts (39 mph+).
• Tropical Storm Winds out to 200 miles from center.
• Hurricane Winds out to 25 miles from center.
• MODEL GUIDANCE/PROJECTIONS
• Model guidance continues westward movement of Alex.
• Landfall (80-100 Miles expected in northern Mexico south of
Brownsville) as Category 2 storm around midnight tonight.
• Additional strengthening possible as Alex moves over warm water
and environment into low wind shear environment.
• 18-24 hours of tropical storm force winds (39-73 mph) possible
Deep South TX counties (Cameron, Willacy) bordering Rio Grande.
• RAINFALL ‐ Greatest threat would be heavy rainfall and flash
flooding over South Texas from today through Friday 6”‐ 12”
totals possible. Isolated areas of higher amounts up to 20
inches, mainly Rio Grande area of Deep South Texas.
• WIND ‐ Strong tropical storm force winds (50‐70 mph) – and
isolated hurricane force winds – mainly Deep South Texas
counties today/tonight, with durations 18‐24 hours possible.
• STORM SURGE ‐ 3 to 5 feet above ground level immediate
coast with local levels as high as 7 feet (Cameron County).
• TORNADOES – Outer bands favorable for isolated but fast
moving small tornadoes.
