Handgun Found in Student Locker at DHS

DAYTON, April 2, 2010 - According to Dayton Superintendent of Schools, Greg Hayman at approximately 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April 1st security officers along with administrative personnel detained a student at Dayton High School for having stolen property on him that was taken from the school consisting of iPods, consumer electronics and a small amount of cash.

As a result of finding the stolen property, Officers searched the student’s athletic locker and an empty 32 caliber semi-automatic handgun was discovered along with a ski mask. The gun was not loaded and no ammunition was found.

This student, described as a white male, has been suspended pending legal action and expulsion proceedings.

Hayman said, “The safety of all our students is our top priority and we are working to be as proactive as possible in this matter.”

Hayman told i-dineout.com that he had served in Dayton Schools for twenty-nine years. In that time there was only one other incident involving a student with a firearm at school. That incident occurred years ago and was a completely different situation. In that instance the student had gone hunting over the weekend and left a shotgun in his truck that he drove to school and was only discovered during a routine, random search. The shotgun was not brought into any school building.

If you are a parent and have questions concerning this incident you may contact the DHS administrative staff during school hours at 258-2510.
