Major Accident on FM 1960 West of FM 686 DAYTON, October 5, 2010 - The Dayton Volunteer Fire Department responded to a head-on collision on FM 1960 less than a half a mile west of FM 686.
The accident involved a small, Chevy 2-door Coupe traveling eastbound and a large Ford Pickup Truck traveling westbound on FM 1960. The Dayton Volunteer Fire Department had to utilize extraction equipment to free the driver of the Chevy Coupe from the wreckage of his vehicle.
Liberty County EMS responded to the scene and prepared the driver of the Chevy for transport by Life Flight to Houston for treatment of severe injuries suffered in the accident. The driver of the Pickup truck, Tammie Smalley age 39 of Porter, TX was transported by Liberty County EMS to Cleveland Regional Medical Center for treatment.
The Dayton Volunteer Fire Department established a landing zone on FM 1960 east of the accident location, cleaned up fluid spills and debris from the vehicles on the roadway and managed traffic control during the investigation and rescue of the accident victims. DPS Trooper Nate Godfrey told i-dineout.com that the driver of the Chevy Coupe was Shawn Goff, age 30 of Porter.
According to Trooper Godfrey the driver of the pickup stated that she, “Blacked Out,” left the roadway then pulled back onto the roadway crossing into the eastbound lane and crashed head-on into the Chevy Coupe. Trooper Godfrey stated that after the collision the pickup traveled over the top of the Chevy Coupe and came to rest in the grassy ditch on the north side of FM 1960 a considerable distance west from the point of impact. Trooper Godfrey stated that as part of the accident investigation a blood sample would be taken from the driver of the pickup to determine what factors may have contributed to this accident. The accident occurred at 10:48 PM on Tuesday and at 1:00 AM the roadway had not yet reopened.
