Liberty Community Garden Off the Ground

LIBERTY, June 25, 2010 - The new Liberty Community Garden Project is off to a good start! The non-profit 501(c)3 status will soon be approved. A board of directors has been selected, bylaws approved and the L.I.S.D. board has approved the use of property at 2525 Grand Avenue for the community gardens. The Liberty Rotary Club have given the first grant in the amount of $2,500.

Partners in this project are Liberty Rotary Club, Texas AgriLife Extension office, Liberty County Master Gardeners, L.I.S.D., City of Liberty, Langetree D.UC.K. F.A.R.M, AmeriCorps/VISTA, and other community leaders. The Board of Directors includes the following: President, Tracy Williams (Liberty Rotary Club President; Vice President, Al Brandli (Liberty Rotary Club, Liberty Master Gardeners, VISTA, St. Stephen's Episcopal); Secretary, Alexis Cordova (Texas AgriLife Extension Agent, Liberty Rotary); Treasurer, Frieda Davis (Liberty County Master Gardeners); Financial Secretary, Debbie Haynie (Haynie Enterprises).

A community garden is a space open to the community, where individuals can rent a garden plot for a small annual fee, to grow either vegetables or flowers as they desire. The Liberty Community Garden will be an organic garden with demonstration plots, gardening and nutrition classes provided to the greater community. Each school campus has free use of 2 plots for gardens. The children of our community need to know that food comes from the ground, not from the grocery store. For further information to rent a plot, please contact the Extension office at 935-336-4558, ext. 221.
