Fleeing Juvenile Apprehended by Police

LIBERTY, February 11, 2010 - Curtis Swearingen was at the Auto Zone Store in Liberty on US 90, driving a black, GMC pickup when a light blue 2005 Ford Taurus collided with his pickup and fled the scene around 11:15 AM on Thursday.

Swearingen phoned the City of Liberty Police Department and followed the blue Taurus. The Taurus took a surreptitious route through the streets of Liberty ultimately winding up at the dead end of North Travis Street in the Travis Park Subdivision.

Swearingen stayed on the phone with the Police Department throughout the incident advising them of the direction of travel of the Taurus. Officer Josh Cummins, the investigating Officer, positioned himself attempting to intercept the Taurus.

Once at the end of North Travis Street the Taurus executed a right turn leaving the road, crossing a yard then crashed into a Crepe Myrtle tree. The driver, a 16 year old Black, juvenile of Raywood, fled the scene on foot cutting through the woods and was apprehended by waiting Police in the Liberty City Park near the maintenance building.

The juvenile was transported to the City of Liberty Police Department and after intake procedures gave Officers a statement about the incident.

He was magistrated by Justice of the Peace Bobby Rader and is scheduled to appear before a Juvenile Judge in about a week.

He was released into the custody of his Aunt, who was also the owner of the Ford Taurus he was driving.
