Tree Crashes Through Manufactured Home UPDATED

LIBERTY, August 14, 2010 - It was around 11:30 AM on Saturday morning when a very large oak tree came crashing through a manufactured home in the Chapman Mobile Home Park in Hardin injuring one of the occupants of the home.

The home was the residence of Bonnie and Hugh Bishop. Bonnie works for the Liberty County Sheriff’s Department and Hugh is an Officer for the City of Liberty Police Department.

Woodcock’s Tree Service of CR 133 in Moss Bluff was employed cutting down a tree and Lester D. Durham, Jr. was helping the tree service remove the tree. Workmen spent yesterday cutting down the tree from the top due to its’ close proximity to the manufactured home and today things went horribly wrong.

The Hardin and Hull Daisetta Volunteer Fire Department responded with tools and jacks to rescue the homeowners from the wreckage of their home.

Bonnie and Hugh Bishop were lying on the bed in their bedroom discussing plans for lunch when the tree came crashing through the roof.

Bonnie Bishop was transported by Liberty County EMS to a landing zone at Hardin City Hall and flown to Houston’s Hermann Hospital for treatment of back and other injuries.

A worker cutting down the tree with the Woodcock Tree Service, Lester D. Durham, Jr., gave an interesting and informative interview. According to Durham his job was to hook onto to the tree with his truck and pull in away from the home if it started going the wrong way.

Listen to the full-length interview of his views on the reasons for this accident. Durham claims it was all an act of God or stupidity and the Bishop’s were “Tempting God,” which is prohibited in the Bible by being in the bedroom while the tree was being cut down.

UPDATE: Hugh Bishop writes... Bonnie was hit by a tree that fell through our roof. She will be OK, but she is banged up real good. She has a couple of spinal fractures (#11 & #12), a couple of rib fractures, and a gash on her head that needs a couple of staples. They are saying she will be out of here in a day or two. Lots of pain, but prognosis is promising. Let y'all know more shortly.

UPDATE II: Bonnie is being fitted for a full back brace and Doctor's will be getting her up and trying to get her to walk. Hugh stated that this would be very painfull but they would try it.
