DAR Good Citizens Award Presented To Area Students

LIBERTY, November 11, 2010 - The Libertad Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution honored six area high school students in the library of the Price and Jean Daniel home next to the Sam Houston Regional Library Thursday evening, November 18th with their “DAR Good Citizens Award.” The DAR Good Citizens program and scholarship contest is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship. The program is open to all senior class students enrolled in accredited public or private secondary schools. The student selected as the school’s DAR Good Citizen must have the qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism to an outstanding degree and may optionally complete an essay administered under the supervision of a faculty member to qualify at state and national level. This year’s essay subject was “Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility for Preserving It.” Catherine Kuchan, Libertad DAR Good Citizen Chairman presented each winner a Good Citizen Certificate, Medal and a $100 scholarship savings bond.

The 2010 Libertad DAR Good Citizens scholarship recipients are:

CLEVELAND - Jacylynn Victoria Rush, daughter of William and Jacy Rush. As a member of the Cleveland High School Air Force JROTC, at age 17, Jacylynn has already earned the rank of Cadet Lt. Colonel. She has been inducted into the National Honor Society as well as the Kitty Hawk Air Society, which is the AFJROTC’s honor society.

DAYTON – Mary Victoria Fielder, daughter of Mike and Paula Fielder. In characterizing Mary, her English teacher states “she is a natural leader; she is respected by her teachers and well-liked by her peers. She has the innate ability to foster camaraderie and nurture motivation among various groups.”

HARDIN – Sydney Lauren Melton, daughter of Tina Melton. Recognizing Sidney’s potential for leadership, organization and people skills during her first year working on the school’s yearbook, her yearbook advisor promoted her to Editor-in-Chief the second year above other more experienced staff members.

HULL-DAISETTA – Katelyn Ciera McCreight, daughter of Andy and Connie McCreight. Katelyn was described by one of her teachers as “the most capable, charming, well-rounded young women I have ever had the privilege of encountering in my almost 30 years of teaching and coaching.”

LIBERTY – Ember Beth Ainsworth, daughter of Rusty Ainsworth and Jana Jones. Ember was characterized by her English teacher as “a success story in the making; her kindness is natural, altruistic and consistent.” She is also active with the Link Crew that “links” freshmen with the high school community aiding in decreasing high school dropout rates.

TARKINGTON – Leah Ann Ebner, daughter of Bennett and Kay Ebner. Leah is a member of the People to People Student Ambassador Program that allows students to travel abroad promoting good relations and better understanding of other countries. This program has given Leah the opportunity to travel to France, Italy and Greece learning about history as well as visiting the Vatican, Olympus and the Eiffel Tower.
