Arrest in Liberty Murder Case

LIBERTY, July 2, 2010 - On the early evening of Thursday July 01, 2010, the Liberty Police Department (LPD) arrested Alberto Sanchez, 30, for an outstanding murder warrant.

The warrant was issued after an incident on the early morning July 04, 2009, in the 500 block of Missouri St. in Liberty, where one man was shot to death and a second man received a gunshot wound to the leg. While the suspect was identified early on in the case, his illegal status kept him on the run and changing residences for almost a year.

Thursday afternoon, LPD Officer Rolando Aguilar had spotted Alberto Sanchez driving a silver Dodge pickup truck in the area of Main and Myrtle. Aguilar thought the driver of the truck matched a description of a recent assault case. Aguilar turned around and tried to catch up to the truck to see if he could stop and identify the driver. Aguilar stopped the truck on Kentucky St., just south of Grand at 7:20 p.m.

As Aguilar approached the truck, the driver and two females got out. The driver then fled on foot into the neighborhood. Aguilar and assisting LPD Officer Mike Prado subsequently found the driver behind a house in the 2400 block of Grand Ave. The driver resisted arrest, but was brought under control by the use of pepper spray. Neither the officers nor the driver were injured. The driver was taken to the PD for processing, where he gave a false name and date of birth.

While at the PD, Detective Elaine Taylor observed some of the tattoos on the driver’s arms and chest as matching the suspect description in the murder case from ’09. The silver Dodge truck on the traffic stop also matched the description of the truck that had fled from the scene in ’09, even though there had been some minor alterations to the truck since then. Detective Taylor verified all of the case information, evidence and witness statements from the murder case and determined that the driver was indeed the wanted murder suspect.

Officer Aguilar transported the driver, Alberto Sanchez to the Liberty County Jail and served the outstanding warrant. Justice of the Peace Bobby Rader set bond at $1,000,000.

LPD Lieutenant Kenneth Taylor is the lead investigator for the murder case. Lt. Taylor will finalize the case for presentation to the Liberty County District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
