Major Accident in Ames

AMES, October 30, 2009 - A major accident that sent the driver of a Cadillac Sedan to Houston by Life Flight occurred at the intersection of US 90 and FM 160 in Ames on Friday morning around 10:30 PM.

The driver of the Cadillac was identified as Justin Lee Zebranek age 21 of Liberty. Liberty County EMS transported him to the helipad at the fire station in Liberty where he was transferred to the care of Life Flight and flown to Houston for treatment.

According to DPS Trooper Troy Dyson he suffered broken bones in his left shoulder. The driver of the 18-wheeler, George Perez age 48 of San Antonio was not injured.

The driver of the Cadillac was traveling east on US 90 and was in the left turn lane to make a left turn onto FM 160 when, at the last minute, he decided to make a right turn directly in the past of an oncoming, eastbound 18-wheeler. The vehicles collided in the intersection and slid into the pole holding up the traffic signals and destroying the signaling equipment.

The accident damaged the poles holding up the traffic signals at the intersection causing the signals to fall to just a few feet above the roadway.

TXDOT personnel will be setting up temporary signs making the intersection a four way stop until the traffic signaling equipment can be repaired.

The westbound lane of traffic was utilized by alternating east and westbound vehicle with high loads use extra caution as they passed under the cables holding up the traffic signals.

This accident took a considerable time to clear due to damage to signaling equipment and the size of the truck.

According to Trooper Dyson citations will be issued to the driver of the Cadillac. All parties were insured.
