Tarkington House Fire
TARKINGTON, July 15, 2008 - Shortly before 4:00AM on Tuesday morning, Cleveland Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a structure fire on FM 787 approximately one mile east of Cleveland Municipal Airport.
Upon realizing the fire was in Tarkington, Tarkington Volunteer Fire Department was also dispatched.
Cleveland Fire Chief Steve Wheeler arrived at the scene to find the single-story home fully-involved. Firefighters from Cleveland and Tarkington battled the blaze for nearly three hours while tankers from both departments shuttled water from the nearest fire hydrant, which was over a mile away.
The house was vacant and due to the suspicious nature of the fire, Liberty County Fire Marshal Jim Wilson and Liberty County Sheriff’s Detective Kenny Dagle were called in to investigate.
