Annual Trinity River Butterfly Count

LIBERTY, October 2, 2008 - In conjunction with National Wildlife Refuge Week and Butterfly Enthusiasts of Southeast Texas , the Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge will be hosting the Tenth Annual Trinity River Butterfly Count in northern Liberty County on Saturday, October 11th. Areas to be counted include the Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge, Tarkington Prairie, and Gaylor Lake area. We will meet at 9:00am at the Valero Gas station located at the intersection of Hwy 105 and Hwy 321, six miles south of Cleveland.

In addition to the butterfly event, the Refuge will also host the "Big Sit" event on Sunday, October 12th. The rules could not be easier; refuge volunteers, Friends and/or local birders sit in a 17-foot diameter circle and identify all the birds they see or hear during a 24-hour (or less) period. We will start at 7:00 am at the Champion Lake pier and go to sunset. Champion Lake is located at the end of CR 417, two miles east of FM 1409 or about 10 miles south of Dayton. You can come and stay as long as you want during the day long event. Bring a chair. Go to http://www.birdwatchersdigest.com/site/funbirds/bigsit/register.aspx for further information on the "Big Sit"

Some folks will butterfly the "bottoms" so be sure to bring a sack lunch, rubber knee boots and other appropriate outdoor clothing. Butterfly enthusiasts of all levels are welcome. If you have any questions you can contact Stuart Marcus at 936/336-9786
