Gas Line Ruptured in Ames AMES, December 15, 2008 - It was just before 4:00 PM on Monday afternoon that Liberty County Sheriff’s Department dispatchers were notified of a gas leak at the intersection of FM 160 South and Cormier Street in Ames, TX. Department of Public Safety Troopers were first to arrive on scene and observed the smell of natural gas.
The City of Liberty Fire Department responded as did additional units from the Sheriff’s Department to close traffic on FM 160 South of US 90 and on West end of Cormier Street.
Workers cleaning up building debris at the old Ames Volunteer Fire Department accidently ruptured a natural gas line. Workers stated that they did not see a gas meter and did not know the gas line was there. According to Liberty County Emergency Management Coordinator Tom Branch, who was on the scene nearby residents sheltered in place until Center Point Energy personnel could turn off the gas. Roads were closed for about an hour before traffic was restored.
