Hurricane Ike Preparations

LIBERTY, September 11, 2008 - People in Liberty Spent the day preparing for Hurricane Ike to make landfall.

According to City of Liberty Emergency Management Director Fred Collins, the timeline for Liberty to begin experiencing Tropical Force winds will be earlier than first reported. Tropical Force winds are expected to begin as early as 7:00 AM Friday morning, increasing to Hurricane Force winds early Saturday evening.

High winds are expected to be experienced in Liberty for a period of about 24 hours.

According to Collins both the City of Liberty and Liberty County will be issuing a mandatory evacuation order by 6:00 PM today.

People flocked to local Grocery Stores, Gas Stations and Hardware stores getting necessary supplies ahead of the Hurricane Ike and local merchants were working at a feverish pace to take care of the needs of residents. This weather event has inspired much goodwill between neighbors and friends in the community as they help each other get prepared.

Several businesses were boarding up windows throughout the day and many closed early today in Liberty.

New cars at the Chevrolet Dealership in Liberty were all moved to higher ground in anticipation of heavy rains and possible flooding of low lying areas.

Generators were selling like hot cakes and local merchants were doing what they could to get additional shipments.

Stay tuned for more information as soon as it becomes available.
