Don’t Fight the Mall, Do it Online LIBERTY, December 10, 2006 – With so little extra time around the holiday season many people are turning to the internet to do Christmas shopping and purchase gifts. Let’s face it, who has the time to browse through the crowded department stores during the holidays? The US Census Bureau reported that in 2005 e-commerce sales for the fourth quarter was $27.1 billion dollars. This represented 2.7 percent of total retail sales over the period and exceeded e-commerce sales for all other quarters of the year. E-commerce sales were up 23 percent in the fourth quarter of 2005 over the fourth quarter of 2004, a staggering increase indicative of the popularity of online shopping. The cost of transportation, people’s lack of free time to shop and the improved performance and security of e-commerce websites are fueling this trend. Ordering online is simple and convenient. Retail e-commerce will continue to increase as high-speed Internet service becomes more widely available and the cost of transportation continues to rise. Ordering online just saves so much time.
