Halstead Calls for Property Tax Relief

LIBERTY, December 1, 2005 - It is with great pride that I announce my candidacy for the office of Liberty County Judge.

Liberty County is faced with some tough issues that need to be resolved to allow for future growth. The hurdles we face require proven, qualified leadership.

First and foremost, we must bring property tax relief to the tax payers of Liberty County. To accomplish this goal, we must attract industry and create new jobs. We must address economic development by bringing in more businesses and residents that pay taxes. It will reduce the burden on those that are already paying their fair share of taxes. Without some type of relief, economic growth is hindered.

We have to find ways to make the County Government operate efficiently and economically. In return, pass on those savings to the citizens that pay taxes.

As Mayor of Liberty, I was faced with high electrical rates that hindered growth and was a burden to the residents. I have worked hard to reduce our electrical rates. That plan was successful and I know I can do the same for Liberty County with regard to property tax relief. I now want to bring that same hard work, determination, vision and leadership to Liberty County.

We need to bring responsibility and accountability back to Liberty County government. Over the years, we have all seen the scandals and embarrassments that have occurred. With a new vision of leadership and an experienced government leader at the helm, I am confident we can restore governmental integrity. For too long, there have been divisions within our county and it is time that we all pull together for the good of the entire county. It is my desire to unify this great county in which we live.

I have worked with Democrats and Republicans. Even though at times we may have disagreed, argued or differed in opinion, we always found common ground and took action that was for the greater good and in the best interest of all citizens. I know that with a proper working relationship between Liberty County, and our State and Federal officials, we will be successful in making Liberty County a better place to live, work and raise a family.

I will work diligently to formulate goals, objectives and action plans to bring about a positive, optimistic future for the landscape of Liberty County, its citizens and its businesses.

I have been married to my wife, Julie, for 19 years and we have four children. I am an active member of the First Baptist Church of Liberty. I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration (B.B.A.) from Florida Atlantic University in December, 1984, majoring in Finance. I earned a law degree from South Texas College of Law in May, 1987 and I am licensed to practice law in the State of Texas. I have been employed by Jones & Granger of Houston since May, 1985 and am now a Partner. My status as Partner allows me the time and flexibility to seek this office and I solemnly promise to work hard, be diligent and do what is best for all people of Liberty County.

Based on my prior experience as Mayor, coupled with my degrees in Finance and Law, I feel as though I possess the skills, education and experience and I am duly qualified to serve as your Liberty County Judge. I have always worked hard and dedicated long hours to the goals that needed to be accomplished. I will always keep the best interests of all Liberty County citizens at the forefront of my actions. It would be my honor to have the opportunity to serve the citizens of this great county and would ask for your support and vote in the 2006 Primary and General Election.
