Road Closure at Champion Lake Public User Area

LIBERTY June 8, 2018 ⎯ Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge is temporarily closing the federal road portion of CR 417 that leads into the Champion Lake Public Use Area on Tuesday, June 12, located 10 miles south of Dayton, TX. Hurricane Harvey flooding damaged a 40 foot concrete culvert located at the junction of where the County Road and Federal Road meet. The damage has gotten progressively worse since September 2017 and has become a safety concern for the general public to drive over. There are currently cones and markers delineating the affected area. A new culvert design is in the process of being approved. Emergency funding has been approved, but we are estimating it may take a few more months until the bidding and building process is complete.

All access to the Champion Lake Public Use Area will be closed to all entry (no fishing, boating, walking, or biking). Please be advised that if you drive down the county portion of CR 417, you will have difficulty in turning around at the gate that is blocking the road. The Champion Lake Public Use Area is located at the end of County Road 417 off of FM 1409 in southern Liberty. For further information, please contact the Refuge Manager at 936/336-9786.
